David Chernushenko resigns

12:10pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2007

David Chernushenko has stepped down as this riding’s candidate for the next election. I’ve volunteered on David’s previous election campaigns and worked with him on the riding executive. I’m sorry to see him step down, but I’m not surprised. Due to two consecutive minority governments and a long by-election, we’ve been something approaching “campaign mode” for almost three years. During that time, David has worked tirelessly on the riding executive, as nominated candidate, and as unofficial representative for the entire time. He has brought thousands of votes to our growing party, and attracted countless volunteers and donations.

David has taken pains to point out that his resignation is not a rejection of the Green Party. There are many opportunities that further our goals that are unavailable to someone tied so tightly to a political organization. His resignation from the party allows him to resume his post with the National Round Table on the Environment and Economy. He is embarking on an Al-Gore-esque documentary and speaking project. Neither of these paths would be available to a party candidate, but both are available to a concerned citizen.

The Ottawa Citizen’s coverage of the resignation suggests that David is resigning his role as Senior Deputy to the Leader because of differences between him and party leader, Elizabeth May. I don’t think that is the case. I’ve spoken with both of them about their roles, and both were happy with the arrangement. Both were listed as co-authors on the GP2 party’s climate change plan last fall. It seems as if the Citizen is overplaying David’s concerns for Elizabeth’s health, which isn’t surprising, considering that she’s going to be having hip replacement surgery soon, and her public worries earlier in the summer.

David deserves the last word:

As a future election approaches, I will certainly consider running again. I still believe I have something to offer, and many of you and many people in Ottawa Centre have made it clear that they believe in me and share my vision for this place and this country. Whatever I do, I aim to keep earning their and your respect and trust by doing work that renews, replenishes and frees people’s imagination and passion.

Good luck David. You’ve done this riding a service.
