7:30pm on Monday, August 3, 2009
Pride Parade 2009 has come and gone: check out what we did!
We Are All Shades Of Green Pride Parade Banner

In support of Ottawa’s Capital Pride, the Green Party is organizing an entry in the Pride Parade – and you are invited!

The Parade: Anyone and everyone is welcome to join our group and walk/dance/roll in the parade.  We’re still working on our theme, but plan to come wearing a green shirt and bring your preferred noise maker (we’ll have some to hand out too).

  • Date: Sunday August 30th
  • Time: 11:30am (please be there by 12 noon).
  • Location: Brickhill/Commissioners and Old Wellington Street.  There is no parking available at the staging area, but it’s a 2 minute walk from the Lebreton Flats Transitway Station.  (Map)
  • RSVP: Kevin O’Donnell (kevin.odonnell@ottawagreens.ca)

The Information Fair: We will be setup at the information fair that happens at the same time as the parade and runs all night.  Stop by and read up on the Green Party, talk to our volunteers, and find out more about the diversity within the Green Party itself. (hint: we’re not a one issue party!)

  • Date: Sunday August 30th
  • Time: 1pm
  • Location: City Hall

LGBT and the Green Party of Canada: We support…

  • Public education to end prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Amending the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code to explicitly protect trans people from discrimination and hate crimes
  • Repealing s.159 of the Criminal Code, which sets a higher age of consent for anal intercourse and unfairly singles it out for restrictive treatment
  • Ending the targeting by Canada Customs of GLBTQ bookstores and other GLBTQ businesses
  • Ensuring Canada advocates internationally for an end to state-sanctioned discrimination and violence against GLBTQ people

LGBT and the Green Party of Ontario: We will…

  • Protect same-sex marriage in all areas of the law that are provincial jurisdiction
  • Move toward a single public school system for each official language, and increasing education about all religions in public schools.  We want our children to learn the values of tolerance, equality, and diversity.
  • Green Party of Ontario Leader Frank de Jong was the only party leader to agree to participate in a debate “Queering the Vote” hosted by queer lobby group Egale Canada.  Read the story on Xtra’s website (http://bit.ly/26I8AF).

  • For sure, Ottawa Pride Parade is really a successful one. I feel sorry that I missed it.
    By the way, nice post.
