Debate on Electoral Reform Sponsored by the FCA
On October 10, Ontario voters will be presented with a referendum
question on whether to replace the current “first past the post” system
of electing MPPs with a new proportional representation system.
The effects could be dramatic: if the proposed Mixed-Member Proportional
(MMP) system had been in place in the 1990s, neither the NDP’s Bob Rae
nor the Progressive Conservatives’ Mike Harris would have had a majority
government.
But there’s been very little chance for voters to hear a balanced
assessment of the new system, and, even importantly, to ask questions.
That’s why the Federation of Community Associations (FCA), representing
more than 30 community associations from across Ottawa, is sponsoring a
non-partisan debate on the topic on Sunday, Sept. 30.
“We want Ottawa voters to make an intelligent choice on this issue,”
said FCA President Archie Campbell, “not a snap decision in the voting
booth because they haven’t been able to get enough information in
advance.”
The debate will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 30, in the main-floor Council
Chambers at Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue W. The speakers will be
Peter Black from “Vote for MMP Ottawa”, and Martin Laplante from “No to
MMP”.
Admission is free.
When: 2:00 PM, Sunday September 30th, 2007
Where: Main-floor Council Chambers, Ottawa City Hall,
110 Laurier Avenue W.
